Job Description

The Medical Reimbursement Specialist is accountable for performing collecting follow-up functions for Medicare, State Medicaids, and Commercial Insurances. The primary goal for this position is to ensure that all Collections functions are performed on time, accurately and in adherence to processes and procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Initiate calls to customers and insurance companies by phone or mail to collect payments and settle accounts.
  • Follow-up on accounts, update and maintains accurate financial records
  • Identify and correct errors
  • Appeal claims
  • Protect patient confidentiality, according to HIPAA guidelines
  • Build and maintain relationships with payor representatives

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain patient files
  • Investigate complaints
  • Respond to customer questions

Skills, Competencies, and Experience:

  • Strong knowledge of claim and benefit requirements for Medicare, Medicaid, HMO, PPO and/or third-party payors.
  • Work with clients in a respectful empathetic manner, be an effective listener
  • Anticipate issues, research and implement creative solutions.
  • Calculate figures and amounts correctly, such as interest and percentages.
  • Be proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Negotiate with payors

Education and Certifications:

  • 3-5 years hands-on experience in a collections role within a DME or health care, related field required.


  • Associate Degree, or some college coursework.
  • Proficiency with a billing system, such as Brightree, CareTend or CPR+


  • Medical Collections: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Medical Billing And Coding: 1 year (Preferred)
