Job Description


Position Summary:
Reporting to the ICD Practice Director, the ICD Fiduciary Accountant/Tax Manager is responsible for ICD's resources and protocols for ensuring the accurate preparation and timely filing of federal and state fiduciary income and estate tax returns in all jurisdictions. This position is also responsible for ensuring training for ICD paralegals on tax preparation and related resources and procedures (such as e-filing and docketing) and for managing Day Pitney's relationships with outside vendors that provide tax-related support and services. In addition, this position will be directly responsible for the preparation and filing of fiduciary income tax returns and estate tax returns. The ICD Fiduciary Accountant/Tax Manager may take on other duties and responsibilities as determined by the ICD Practice Director.
Responsibilities:

  • Preparation and timely filing of federal and state individual and fiduciary income tax returns of high complexity, including quarterly federal and state estimated taxes as required
  • Preparation of estate tax returns of high complexity
  • Review of tax returns prepared by others
  • Ensure substantive tax preparation, e-filing and compliance training for ICD staff that prepare tax returns
  • Provide procedural training for ICD staff responsible for processing tax returns and tax-related information
  • Manage and oversee "peer review" of tax returns prepared by paralegals
  • Monitor, manage, and develop tax preparation resources utilized by the paralegals (e.g., software; checklists and other forms; training materials)
  • Ensure tax-related docketing compliance
  • Manage ICD's relationship with outside vendor that provides supplemental tax preparation services (determine scope of work each year and related pricing, oversee procedures for sharing client information with vendor, ensure accurate client billing for outside vendor work)
  • With the Practice Director and other managers, take a leadership role with change management initiatives
  • Demonstrate the highest performance standards and serve as a role model to others
  • Provide leadership with respect to use of technology and recommend procedural improvements to increase efficiency of workflow and of information management
  • Assist the Practice Director and ICD Department leadership with special projects and other duties as needed


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Strong academic background (advanced degree in taxation is preferred)
  • Minimum of eight years' experience preparing complex fiduciary income tax returns and tax returns for large and complex estates
  • Minimum of five years' direct fiduciary tax experience in a law firm, accounting firm or bank trust department
  • Familiarity with tax preparation software and related programs
  • Ability to train and mentor
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple, detailed tasks
  • Excellent team work, collaboration, organizational and project management skills
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to motivate and lead others
  • Exhibit sound judgment to make decisions on sensitive issues
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness and the ability to anticipate needs, prioritize responsibilities, take initiative and work independently
